The name of the city comes from ancient Latin, meaning strong fortress. It was founded by the Roman Empire and occupied by the Moors in the 7th century. Another 400 years later, it was occupied by Afonso Henrique, the first king of Portugal. You have time to walk around the old town, which still preserves its originality from ancient times. It was as if time had stopped in the early Middle Ages when King Denis gave the city of Óbidos to Queen Isabel of Aragon as a wedding gift in 1282. Head to Avenida da Liberdade, a late 19th-century shopping street inspired by Paris's Champs-Élysées. This tree-lined street connects two squares (Praça dos Restauradores and Praça Marquês de Pombal) and is known for its luxury shops. It runs from the old town through the heart of the city, ending at Place de la Marquês de Pombal, where the monument to the Marquês de Pombal stands proudly on a tall column.
