The Liberty Bell, weighing 2,080 pounds, has been the city bell of Philadelphia since 1753. It is rung at meetings and important events, before being used to declare independence. It is then rung to mourn the deaths of deceased delegates. The bell began to show cracks in 1835 and cracked after being struck to celebrate President George Washington's birthday. This led the US government to cancel the frequent ringing of the bell to maximize its lifespan. Visit Independence Hall, the site of the Declaration of Independence, located in a Philadelphia park.
